Agriculture Regional Director Remelyn Recoter answers concern from the local chief executives of Davao del Norte on the guidelines of crafting the Priority Commodity Investment Plan, a requirement of the Philippine Rural Development Program to fund various agri-projects in the province. Beside her is Governor Rodolfo Del Rosario who also encourages the mayors to collaborate closely to hasten the submission of PCIP to DA 11.

FARMERS, through their cooperatives, will be prioritized, with 60 percent of the total volume of garlic import to be offered first to farmers’ groups, the Department of Agriculture (DA) said on Monday.

To stabilize the burgeoning prices of garlic, the DA will import around 46,000 metric tons (MT) next month to fill the supply gap, said Agriculture Secretary Proceso J. Alcala.

Alcala said though that unlike in the past, “the financial capacity of the farmers’ cooperatives will be taken into consideration strictly to ensure that they really have the capacity to import and are not only being used as front by traders,” the agriculture chief said in the vernacular.

DA to boost garlic growers’ production

The Department of Agriculture (DA) and the private sector are looking to expand garlic production in the next cropping season to prevent supply problems in the future.

Jennifer Remoquillo, director of DA’s High Value Crops Development Program (HVCDP), said the agency is looking for some 3,000 hectares of new areas that can be used for planting garlic in the next cropping season that starts in October.

Agriculture Regional Director Remelyn Recoter handed the certificate of awards of two units mobile threshers to the beneficiary - Mabini Burayong Communal Irrigation Association Inc during the 47th Town Anniversary of Magsaysay, Davao del Sur. With her is  Magsaysay Municipal Mayor Arthur Davin.
