In line with the DA Secretary's call for collective efforts to ensure food resiliency in this time of health emergency situation, the Department of Agriculture XI-Research Division thru its DARRDEN Food Resiliency Project has partnered with various state universities and colleges (SUCs) in the region in establishing the Gulayan sa Pamantasan.
DA-XI Gulayan sa Pamantasan focal Anecita I. Telabangco said that the project is also a way to encourage each community to produce their own food.
"To achieve food resiliency, we have to realize that it's everyone's responsibility. We need to strengthen our partnership with various stakeholders, partner agencies and communities to establish their own agri production close to home," said Telabangco.
During the Gulayan sa Pamantasan Field Day and Market Encounter today (May 12) at SPAMAST Buhangin in Malita, Davao Occidental, DA-XI Supervising Science Research Specialist Nida E. Gigayon said that there is a vast potential for agri produce during the pandemic that beneficiaries should take advantage.
"This project serves as a venue for each member of the community to engage in agriculture and see its vast potential. This should never stop here but replicate in your own home and soon take advantage of its market potential for you to earn additional income," said Gigayon.
Aside from the vegetable production, the DA-XI research team has partnered with the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources XI for the establishment of the aquaculture in the area.
Meanwhile, DA-XI Research Chief Melani A. Provido said that the project is also in line with the DA Secretary Dar's inclusive approach in agriculture where each program and project should encourage strong participation from the community for a more food-secure and resilient Philippine agriculture. | via Celso Campos Vergara, RAFIS11
