Celebrated at Felis Resort, Matina Aplaya recently, Regional Director Remelyn R. Recoter who graced the event said that though Davao region is not a rice producing area which only contributes 2.8 percent of the national output, its edge is the high yield performance that ranks 4th in 16 regions in the country because of the utilization of good quality rice seeds.

“We still have at least 40 thousand hectares potential irrigable area for development that could increase both production and income of the farmers and rice sufficiency level of the region”, she added.

As Recoter guaranteed to give one (1) sack of certified seeds to each family of the farmer-graduates this 2014, she also asked the graduates to share their knowledge to other farmers from their 16 weeks of learning on air.

The graduates included 315 from Davao del Norte, 118 from Davao City, 14 from Compostela Valley, eight (8) from Davao del Sur and seven (7) from Davao Oriental.

SOA is DA’s Agri-Pinoy radio program that airs on DXRD 711 kHz, Sonshine Radio in Davao at 4am to 5am and covers several topics such as detailed presentation and discussion of technology on rice production modules where farmer enrollees or students are required to interact through text messaging and submission of answers on test questions posted by DA’s farmcasters, among others.

SOA helps the farmers in different areas in the region to reduce production cost that will eventually increase income of the farmers. By empowering them of the knowledge on new technologies on rice farming and other commodities, it has helped these farmers become practical producers and entrepreneurs. (LLbocado-Aggie Media Service)
