DA-XI observes rice awareness month, intensifies hybrid rice promo
In time of the National Rice Awareness Month (NRAM), Department of Agriculture in Region XI (DA-XI) intensified its rice hybridization program by conducting techno briefing in various provinces of Davao Region.
November was declared National Rice Awareness Month by virtue of Proclamation No. 524 signed on Jan. 5, 2004, by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Hybrid rice production is one of the most important technology for farmers to improve rice production in the country of. DA Secretary Emmanuel Piñol said that rice hybridization will enable the country to meet the targeted rice self-sufficiency for the country.
Piñol cited four strategies: promotion of hybrid rice; access to credit; access to right marketing; and provision of post-harvest facilities.
The DA XI-Regional Agri-Fisheries Information Section (RAFIS) will also conduct School-on-the Air (SOA) on Hybrid Rice production this month which will produce by 500 farmer graduates.
The farmers are given added knowledge from various experts especially in rice mechanization as they adapt to a changing world.
He also added that the distribution of post-harvest facilities will be prioritized by DA to lessen production and post-harvest losses among farmers.
DA is also gearing up for the celebration of NRAM through series of activities for the public to be more RICEponsible.
With the theme, Ready? SET rice! RICEponsible Filipinos save rice, eat healthy, and try brown rice, this year’s celebration encourages the public to eat the right proportion of rice and its healthy forms such as brown rice and rice mixes.
RICEponsible is a word play on rice and responsible.
