DA cites Davao del Sur as outstanding organic province

The Department of Agriculture in Region XI (DA-XI) has conferred the most outstanding organic province award to Davao del Sur during the recent Regional Organic Agriculture Congress held in Davao City.

This comes after the province has garnered seven out of eight Regional Organic Agriculture Achievers Award (ROAAA). These   include: the Most Outstanding Provincial Organic Agriculture Focal Person which is awarded to Ms. Marylou Ll. Jalalon;

Most Outstanding Municipal Organic Agriculture Focal Person to Mr. Jesusimo D. Florentino; Most Outstanding Organic Agriculture Small Farmer Group to Magsaysay Organic Farmers Marketing Cooperative (MOFARMCO); Most Outstanding Organic Agriculture Farming Family to Mr. Janilo Espinosa and Family (who is shortlisted for 2017 NOAAA);

Most Outstanding Organic Agriculture Individual Farmer to Mr. Roderick P. Buenconsejo and the Municipality of Magsaysay, Davao del Sur as the Most Outstanding Municipality while the Most Outstanding Organic Agriculture Agricultural Extension Worker (AEW) is garnered by Ms. Marilou N. Runas from the Province of Davao del Norte.

The award is presented to individuals who are actively supported DA in the implementation and promotion of organic agriculture for a well-developed and advanced organic industry in the Region.

In his message during the conduct of the 3rd Regional Organic Agriculture Congress held on August 23 in Davao City, DA OIC- Regional Director Ricardo Onate, Jr. lauded the efforts and unwavering support of the agency's partners in its Organic Agriculture Program.

 "I would like to commend you all for supporting Organic Agriculture as a way to sustain and enhance the health of our ecosystem as well as organisms including human beings," Onate added.

 Ms. Janice May A. Seraspe, DA-XI Organic Agriculture Program focal person said 34,262.18 hectares of land area in the region had been devoted/converted to organic farming and with the agency's support, production of agri organic products reached 3,210.91 metric tons.

 She said 12 farms in the region had already acquired third party organic certification which is essential in maintaining the integrity of organically-produced products.
