DA urges farmers to become agripreneurs

Department of Agriculture (DA) in partnership with Philippine Center for Entrepreneurship (PCE)-Negosyo urged farmers in Davao Region to learn agribusiness skills.

Launched Friday in Davao City, Kapatid Agri Mentoring Program (KAMP) is a 12-week coaching session for micro and small entrepreneurs. It covers eight modules and two of which including the Entrepreneurial Mind Setting and Values Formation and Marketing were discussed.

“The PCE will identify the mentors while DA will identify the mentees for the program. Agricultural Training Institute (ATI) will then conduct the Training Needs Assessment (TNA),” said PCE-Go Kapatid Mentor Me resource speaker Victor Madlangbayan.

DA-11 Regional Director Ricardo Oñate, Jr. said the program is timely since there is a need for the farmers to embrace change and go beyond as mere producers of raw materials but market their own products to improve their income.

"As we promote value chain and market-oriented agriculture, it's time for our farmers to be transformed into agri-entrepreneurs," Oñate adds.

He said that the mentorship program is an indication that the business success is not actually exclusive but more inclusive and once shared, more people can benefit.

“That is why mentoring is essential for them [farmers]. We need to improve their practices, techniques and teach them how to become successful agripreneurs,” Oñate stressed.

The launching of the program expects to match agri-enterprises with big companies and eventually upscales agri micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

Agriculture is one of the sectors that the program wants to equip and empower since Philippines is an agricultural country and has all the resources and market for crops and other agricultural products.
