bets10 DA, BJMP to engage inmates in vegetable production

During the Harvest and Trading Ceremony conducted on July 12 at Purok Katipunan, Barangay Madaum, Tagum City, MVSFA agreed to plant vegetables and sweet corn which will be bought by BJMP Tagum.

The said agreement which is the first in the country would help the Madaum farmers in trading their yields since there are around 400 ‘bakasyonistas’ in BJMP Tagum City with 20 pesos allocated for every ‘bakasyonista’ and if successful, it will be implemented regionwide with around 5,000 ‘bakasyonistas’.

Dir. Oñate in his message said that this is just one of the initiatives supported by DA- XI aside from Gulayan sa Paaralan and the Gulayan sa Kampo in line with the celebration of the Nutrition Month.

“Under our High Value Crops Development Program [HVCDP] we have intensified various interventions to encourage the community to plant vegetables since it’s a good source of nutrients needed by our body,” Oñate said.

According to DA XI- HVCDP report, there are 8 infantry battalions participated in the Gulayan sa Kampo and 300 participating schools for the Gulayan sa Paaralan, that’s 50 participating schools in Compostela Valley, 50 schools in Davao Oriental, another 50 in Davao del Sur, 70 participating schools in Davao del Norte, 30 schools in Davao Occidental and 50 schools in Davao City.

In response to the growing number of farmers’ associations and organizations as well as schools and communities engaged in vegetable production, the program has distributed a total of 600kg of assorted vegetable seeds, 8,400kg of mungbean and 9,800kg of peanut seeds, 150kg of yellow and red onion seeds and 1,000kg ginger rhizomes catering to 349 FAs/POs.
