Davao region is getting the biggest share in hybrid rice subsidy at P28.39 million in 2014-2015 dry season and P56.78 million in 2015-2016 dry season.

Rice also known as the world’s most important grain is the staple food for about one half of the world’s population.

Since rice is such an important part too much of the world’s diet it was hoped to remain affordable, especially since it is widely used in defense of world hunger.

Currently,    Scientists introduced next generation (next-gen) varieties of rice to boost the country's self-sufficiency bid.

DA Region XI Director Remelyn Recoter is optimistic that the intensified demonstration on next-gen rice varieties will enhance the performance of rice subsector in the region. Several next-gen demo farms are now being established in Davao del Sur and Davao del Norte.

"Volume of production of rice in the region has increased 421,692 mt in 2013 to 452,267 mt in 2014 with a growth rate 7.25 percent. With the use of certified and high-yielding seeds we hope that we can further improve the performance of rice production in the region," Regional Director Remelyn R. Recoter said.  (Che Palicte DA-11)
