Region 11’s corn production to reach 23.47% increase in 2014

DAVAO CITY – Data from Philippine Statistics Authority- Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (PSA- BAS) said that corn production in Davao region was projected to have an increase of 23.47 percent for 2014.

Both white and yellow corn production in 2013 was at 227, 013 metric tons (MT) and

projected to reach a higher output of 280,293 MT last year.

 Davao region’s area of harvested corn has increased from 159, 387 hectares in 2013 to 169, 306 hectares in 2014.

Davao del Sur contributes the highest volume of production in 2014 with 85, 006 MT, followed by Compostela Valley with 48,709 MT, Davao Oriental with 45,673 MT, Davao City with 18,764 and Davao del Norte with 14, 566 MT.

During the recent conducted two day Agri-Pinoy Corn and Cassava Program Year End Review by Department of Agriculture regional office (DA 11), Field Operations Division Supervising Agriculturist Herna Palma said that the increase is the result of the agency’s interventions through quality seeds and extension activities which include training and distribution of technology, investments in farm mechanization and advancement of harvest facilities to lower losses.

The DA 11 Corn program have already obligated more than of P 74 million worth of interventions from the   P 79, 787 million budget in 2014. The remaining funds are set to be procured this year once the enabling documents from concerned parties are approved.

According to PSA-BAS data, Davao region is one of the expected contributors of the bulk increment of the Philippine output this year among Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Northern Mindanao and Western Visayas.

"With the promising output of Davao region in 2014, DA 11 will do its best to steadily increase the level of corn productivity since our commitment is the welfare of the corn farmers and the industry”, Palma added. (Lucille Bocado/DA-11)
