DA turns over banana packing houses in Davao del Norte
Four Cavendish banana standard packing houses amounting to P10.87 Million were turned over to the farmer-beneficiaries in three municipalities of Davao del Norte on Tuesday.
Municipalities of Sto. Tomas, Asuncion, and Kapalong received the project wherein one of which is newly constructed while the other three are rehabilitated and was funded by the Department of Agriculture-High Value Crops Development Program (DA-HVCDP) in region 11.
The newly constructed Cavendish banana standard packing house is built in Barangay Casig-ang, Sto Tomas, Davao del Norte and was turned over to Casig-ang San Miguel Multi-purpose Cooperative (CASMIPC).
The project amounted to P3.6 Million, servicing 85 hectares of banana plantation in the area. It has the capacity to produce at least 1,000 boxes a day and manned by 16 workers of which 12 are women.
The other three packing houses that was already rehabilitated is located in Barangay New Bantayan in Asuncion, Davao del Norte servicing 91 hectares of banana plantation and amounting to P2.04 million; Purok 3 Barangay Kimamon in Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte servicing 79 hectares amounting to P2.69 million; and in Barangay Mamacao in Kapalong, Davao del Norte servicing 66 hectares with a project cost of P2.44 million.
It was turned over to the Mindanao Banana Federation of Exporters Association (MBFEA).
Agriculture Undersecretary Emersion Palad who represented Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said that these projects are commitments of the Secretary to the Cavendish banana Farmers in response to the new requirement of the Chinese Government which mandates to register all orchards and facilities to all exporters in China.
He added that these projects are the products of the consultation between DA and the small and big banana players together with other agencies regarding Phyto-sanitary measures.
Aside from the packing houses, DA also turned over a check to the Province of Davao del Norte amounting to P1.5 million for the establishment of tire bath. The check was received by Governor Rodolfo del Rosario and Provincial Agriculturist Dr. Anastasia Notarte. (Aggie Media Service)
