In a consultative meeting with the Mindanao rice farmers, seed producers and millers on the proposed Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of the Rice Trade Liberalization Law held on February 28 in Davao City, Department of Agriculture (DA) Secretary Emmanuel Piñol asked the public to participate in finding solutions to address the ‘adverse effect’ of the Tariffication Law.

These include: improving competitiveness of rice farmers thru use of hybrid and next-generation seeds as well as farm inputs; and enhance resiliency to disasters and climate risks.

"In facing this new challenge, we will make sure that our farmers will be protected," Piñol said.

Planting next generation rice varieties could be our best defense against the influx of imported rice.

After it’s launching on Monday at the Department of Agriculture XI (DA-XI) Compound, the Malasakit Help Desk is already in full operation and served its first client from the Philippine National Police (PNP).
